Sgt. Major Noam Slotki and Master Sgt. Ishay Slotki z'l - Featuring Rabbi Dov Lerner, Young Israel of Jamaica Estates, Clinical asst. Professor YU

"A hero is someone who cannot stand idly by."

Noam and Ishay, sons of Tali and Rabbi Shmuel, brothers to Uri, Avia, Shifra, Ishay, Yonatan (Ishay’s twin), and Zvi Yehuda. Noam was married to Adi and father to a son, served in reserves with the Carmeli Brigade (Brigade 2). Ishay was married to Avia and father to a daughter, served in reserves with the Oded Brigade (Brigade 9). On October 7th, they each left their homes in Be’er Sheva for combat and rescue missions. Side by side, they fought with bravery and on the same day – side by side – they fell in battle. Their father, a search company commander, returned to reserve duty right after the shiva to continue their legacy. Both were family men, models of generosity and devotion, role models of selfless service to others. Noam was 31; Ishay was 24.

Explore the profound evolution of heroism with Rabbi Dr. Dov Lerner, as he reflects on the transition from the ancient warrior archetype to the savior figure embodied by Biblical heroes. Drawing on timeless Jewish teachings, Rabbi Lerner reveals how true strength lies not only in battle, but in moral courage and self-sacrifice. He connects these enduring ideals to the lives of modern-day heroes like the Slotki brothers, Noam and Ishay, whose bravery and ultimate sacrifice inspire us to redefine valor in our own lives. Their legacy calls us to live with purpose, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to others.
