Sgt. Ido Ben Zvi z'l - "To be a better person, in every sense."

Ido, the eldest son of Sharon and Amir, brother to Uri and Naama, and partner to Shira, from Kibbutz Shomrat. He served in the 460th Brigade of the Armored Corps as part of the Tank Commanders’ Course. He was socially active, a youth counselor in the Hashomer Hatzair movement, and an outstanding volleyball player. Before his enlistment, he completed a year of national service in Nitzana. He loved people, loved the desert, and loved to love. He was killed along with two of his friends when their tank struck a powerful explosive device in the Jabaliya area. He was 21 years old when he fell.

In this heartfelt video, Rabbi David Fohrman reflects on Sergeant Ido Ben Zvi’s legacy of striving to “be a good person in every sense of the word,” exploring what that truly means. He suggests that being a good person involves balancing and honoring the many important relationships in life, including family, friends, community, work, and ultimately, with God. Rabbi Fohrman emphasizes that religion serves as a guide to help navigate these diverse obligations, especially the relationship with God, who is both a father and king figure. Ultimately, Rabbi Fohrman sees Ido’s call to be good in all respects as a reminder to juggle and fulfill these roles with integrity, lifting one’s head with pride for living rightly in the world.
