"Don’t be a fork in a world of soups."

Eliyahu Meir (Eli), son of Chana and Avraham, brother to Sarah, Naftali, Ruth, Menashe, Miriam, and Dan, husband to Royah, and father to Tohar and Yosef Avraham. He grew up in Haifa and served as a reservist Hummer driver in the Yiftach Brigade. Known for his constant smile, infectious laughter, and ability to lift spirits even in hard times, he was always the first to volunteer and help. Honoring his parents was a core value. He believed every person should find where they are needed and act there with goodwill. He fell in an operation in central Gaza. He was 28 years old.

In this moving reflection, Rabbi Doron Kornbluth shares a life lesson inspired by Master Sergeant Eliyahu Meir Ohana z"l. Drawing on Ohana’s phrase, “In a world of soup, don’t be a fork,” Rabbi Kornbluth explores the balance between fulfilling one’s unique personal mission and responding to the pressing needs around us. He weaves together teachings from Pirkei Avot, the Baal Shem Tov, and Rav Shlomo Wolbe to highlight the tension between individuality and responsibility. Ultimately, he presents Ohana’s life, his dedication to family, community, and country, as a model of knowing one’s purpose while stepping up when duty calls.
