Major Shay Shamriz z'l - Featuring Rabbi Shay Schachter, Associate Rabbi, Young Israel of Woodmere

"In every generation there were those who stood up and said: ‘Here I am.’ Today it is our turn."

Shay, son of Daniela and Shaul, brother to Reut and Smadar, grew up in Merkaz Shapira and studied at Kvutzat Yavne. He studied at Bnei David Mechina in Eli and served as commander of the spearhead company in the 931st Battalion, Nahal Brigade. He was known for his quietness, humility, clear inner truth, and leadership. Before entering Gaza, he gave a powerful speech that strengthened his soldiers and gave them the courage to fight. He fell in battle at Daraj Tuffah together with his close friend Shauli Greenglick z”l. He was 26 years old.

In this heartfelt reflection Rabbi Shay Schachter emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and living with purpose, drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Adam. Honoring Major Shay Shamriz, who gave his life defending his people, the message calls on us to recognize our unique potential and respond to life’s challenges with the words “Here I am.” This tribute underscores the belief that each of us has a divinely given mission, urging us to bring light and positive change to the world every day.
