Capt. Daniel Perez z'l - Featuring Rabbi Leonard Matanky - Rabbi, KINS of West Rodgers Park - Dean, Ida Crown Jewish Academy

"If not me, then who?"

Daniel, son of Shelley and Rabbi Doron, brother to Yonatan, Adina, and Shira. Born in South Africa and made aliya at 13. Exceptionally social, he quickly integrated into Israeli society and loved spending time with friends. He was known for his boundless energy, fierce willpower, determination, and persistence. Drafted to the Armored Corps, he became an outstanding commander, recognized for his leadership. On October 7th, he commanded a tank near Nahal Oz, bravely fighting for 2 hours against hundreds of Nukhba terrorists to stop the invasion. His body was taken by Hamas and his family awaits his return for burial in Israel. He was 22 years old.

In this moving reflection, Rabbi Leonard Matanky draws a powerful connection between the fragility of the sukkah and the enduring strength of the Jewish spirit, especially in times of loss and sacrifice. He honors the legacy of Captain Daniel Perez z”l, a heroic young soldier who gave his life defending others on October 7th, likening him to a “cloud of glory,” a protector whose bravery continues to inspire. Rabbi Matanky emphasizes that true strength is not found in physical walls, but in faith, courage, and the will to do what is right. Daniel’s story stands as a testament to the lasting power of values, memory, and communal unity, reminding us to seek shelter in faith, compassion, and peace.

I’ve been privileged to hear R. Doron Perez talk about Daniel several times on the FIDF emergency briefings, and to read about him in the Mizrachi magazine and in ‘One Day in October.’ I just want to express to the Perez family, and those who were close to Daniel, that you have given עם ישראל a gift in sharing so honestly and deeply who Daniel was, and how you have lived through first, the unbearable uncertainty of his fate, and then the knowledge of his death. Daniel’s great courage and strength is clearly a manifestation of what he inherited and learned from his extraordinary family. זכרונו לברכה
