On October 7th, amidst chaos and danger, one man from Kibbutz Be'eri stood out for his courage and quick thinking. Shachar Tzemach became a beacon of hope and safety for many, risking his own life to save others. His actions on that day reveal the power of bravery and humanity in the face of crisis.
The Setting: Kibbutz Be'eri on October 7th
Kibbutz Be'eri, located in southern Israel, is a close-knit community known for its agricultural work and peaceful lifestyle. On October 7th, this calm was shattered by an unexpected and violent attack. The kibbutz found itself at the center of a dangerous situation, with residents facing threats to their safety and lives.
On the morning of October 7, 2023, Shachar Tzemach of Kibbutz Be’eri woke to the sound of rocket sirens. Within moments, it became clear that terrorists had infiltrated the kibbutz. Without hesitation, Shachar took his rifle, gave his wife instructions on how to secure their children in the safe room, barricaded his home, and left to defend his community.
As a member of the kibbutz security team, Shachar headed toward the emergency meeting point but diverted when he heard gunfire and found his friend Gil wounded. Inside the kibbutz dental clinic, Shachar attempted to give first aid, joined by members of the medical team and fellow security volunteer Eitan Khadad. Together, they fought for seven hours, killing multiple terrorists and preventing them from entering a nearby neighborhood filled with young families, including Shachar’s own.
Shachar continued fighting until he ran out of ammunition. He was murdered by terrorists, alongside others who stood with him. Later, Major General Miki Edelstein, who investigated the battle, told Shachar’s parents that this was the most critical defensive stand in Kibbutz Be’eri. By holding that position, Shachar and Eitan saved hundreds of lives.
Shachar’s brother, Erden, describes them as growing up almost like twins. They served in the same IDF unit, traveled together, and shared a deep love of the outdoors and their kibbutz.
Erden says with certainty that had Shachar known the cost. That he would give his life to save others. He would have made the same choice. That knowledge brings the family a measure of comfort amid the loss.
The day was filled with narrow escapes and moments Erden calls miracles. Terrorists came within doors of family homes and were stopped just in time. Some houses were inexplicably passed over. Lives were spared again and again.
Since October 7, alongside unimaginable grief, the family has experienced something else. An outpouring of love and support from across Israel and around the world. That solidarity has become a source of strength, reminding them they are not alone. Am Yisrael is one family.
